Good technique is more than knowing the right steps or creating shapes and combinations.
It is about understanding how movement is organised in the body, so that you can access clearer alignment, more effective use of power, smoother transitions, and a greater sense of ease in your dancing.
In Above & Beyond we will explore Egyptian dance technique in depth, beginning with foundational principles and developing them through focused practice. The aim is not simply to make movements look correct, but to help you understand, embody, and control them so they become available to you in improvisation, choreography, performance, and help you strengthen you own personal style.
When technique is known from the inside out, it can support greater freedom and joy in the dance, as well as enhancing your own teaching skills.
This course is suitable for:
You do not need to arrive with everything perfected. You do need some experience of Egyptian dance and a willingness to look closely, practice thoughtfully, and explore how movement works in your own body.
The course is not intended as a replacement for teacher training. It can however offer a valuable foundation for dancers who wish to develop their embodied technical understanding that supports their technique progression and further learning.
Over five sessions we will work with:
Each session includes an in-depth warm-up, focused technical work, drills, practical application, and combinations, followed stretching and a restorative cool-down.
There will also be optional homework between sessions for dancers who would like to explore the material further in their own time.
I am keeping the group small so that there is space for individual feedback, shared learning, and personal attention.
We will go deep into the material together, while still leaving room for each person’s individual needs, questions and discoveries.
My intention is to offer a relaxed, supportive, and focussed space where you can develop your technique, without pressure, and discover what helps your dancing feel clearer, stronger, freer and more alive.
“I can’t believe no one has taught me this before. I feel like I’m finally really learning how to dance, and I am loving it even more than before,” Kelly.
“The course has certainly improved the way I move, especially my arms, and not least given me far greater enjoyment when dancing too,” Hanna.
“I have really enjoyed the course and gained some fresh insights and had a a few ‘light bulb’ moments too. Dorte creates a relaxed and informal atmosphere whilst at the same time giving important dance technique and tips. I would highly recommend the course to relatively new and experienced dancers alike,” Saeeda.
